What Do You Put Under Metal Roofing?
It’s a good question, what do you put under metal roofing? You may think that it’s an easy one, putting cedar sheets over the top to seal and all, but they are not. Cedar will rot and it is an organic compound which can attract termites, so yes, you do want to avoid it. I’m also not suggesting putting mulch over the top of the metal roofing either because that will do the same thing, attract termites, attract moisture and cause rotting.
So, what do you put under metal roofing then? Well if you have a flat roof, you really don’t put any substance above the roofing, but if you have a sloped roof, you may have to put plywood under the metal roof to “stretch” the roofing before installing it. This may sound bad but it really does work, the metal does the work for you while you lay the actual sheeting over the roofing. Another reason plywood is used is because it is cheap and easily obtainable and is just as sturdy as wood, which makes it ideal.
What about what do you put under metal roofing then? Well if you have a straight roof and you have a high pitch roof like the type you get in the California mountains, that is another story. If your pitch is low and steep, you may have to put concrete on top of the metal if it is a flat roof. And if your pitch roof has some sort of trellis system with beams or rafters that need to be braced then you have yourself a problem. Trellises are brittle and they can be damaged by even the smallest vibrations, which means your metal roofing may have to be replaced, and that’s not cheap.
So now that we know what do you put under metal roofing we can talk a little bit about how to maintain the integrity of your metal roofing. This is a very important point, because any coating applied to the surface of the roofing must be maintained to keep it looking good. If it is not maintained then your roof will eventually begin to deteriorate and eventually fall apart. And you don’t want that to happen.
There are plenty of companies that provide coating services. Any roofing company worth their salt will be able to supply you with a trusted contractor that will be able to help you to apply the coating of your choice – whether it is a spray coating, a liquid coating or an asphalt tar coating. The important thing is to select a company that has a great deal of experience in providing these services. A company that has been in this business for some time is more likely to understand the differences between these different coatings and which one would be best for your particular roofing project.
